Choosing a Band Saw

his month's "how to buy" topic is band saws. Depending on what kind of woodworking you normally do, band saws can be essential to the shop or a perfect accessory to the table saw.

There are two common styles of Band saws, the three wheel and the two wheel. After this it is mainly a matter of size. Three wheel band saws give you a greater throat depth than a two wheel having the same blade length but they have other problems, which take away from any cutting advantage. Two wheels are much easier to align properly and keep aligned during use than three. The thinner blades also will break much easier with three wheels because of the extra stress created by smaller wheels. All in all, there are very few three wheel band saws, which are worth the money and hassle they create. There was a time when there were many on the market, but these days they are rare except at garage sales. If you need the extra throat depth then buy a larger two wheel machine. Just as an example, years ago I was using a three wheel band saws and it took me almost half an hour to get the blade to track properly only to find when I put it under load the tracking went off again. From here on I'm only going to talk about the two wheel band saws.

The frame construction is the first thing to look at. Smaller bench top band saws can be pressed metal, plastic resin, steel or cast iron. Larger band saws will be either cast iron or steel. The pressed metal and plastic resin are not as rigid as steel or cast and these saws are definitely meant for light duty hobby and craft work. You are much better off to get one that has a steel or cast iron frame. They will last longer, run smoother and the blades will track better. Larger band saws all come with cast iron or steel frames so you do not have to worry about the rigidity. Each type of frame has its advantages and disadvantages. Steel frames are the most rigid and therefore more stable and smoother running, but they are also more expensive. Cast iron frames are cheaper and often allow you to increase the height capacity using a riser, but having cast parts they can crack and fracture through use. In most home shop applications this is not a large issue but it depends on the amount of use.

Motor size can range from 1/6HP to 1/3HP for bench top and from 1/2HP upward to 3HP or larger on big industrial machines. The smaller the motor the harder it has to work. If you mainly work on smaller crafts or model construction, the smaller bench tops are fine, but in the long run try and go with one, which has 1/4HP or larger. If you build furniture, cabinets or larger projects go with a floor model with at least a 3/4HP motor. The 1/2HP models just don't have enough power for heavier cutting. If you want to cut metal, then make sure the machine has slower speeds, down to less than 200 rpm instead of the approximate 3000 rpm for woodcutting.

Make sure the table tilt and adjustment works smoothly and does not bind anywhere. Tilt it to the full 45 degrees and look underneath to make sure nothing is interfering with the blade. If the saw does not come with a fence, see if the table to drilled and or tapped for a fence rail. The quality of band saw fences is wide, so have a good look at it. If you really like the saw but the fence is garbage all is not lost. If nothing can be done with the existing one you can make your own which can be just as stable and accurate as anything available. The average table size is about 143 x 143. Many woodworkers find this a little small so you can buy or build a larger auxiliary table to give you a greater work surface.

There is not a great deal of difference between an open and closed stand. Open stands are just as stable and in some cases more so, but they do allow your motor to be out in the open where dust can get into it. If you have an open stand make sure you blow the dust out of the motor on a regular basis. Closed stands keep the motor cleaner, but not totally dust free, plus they offer storage space for wrenches, hex keys, manual and accessories.

The blade on a band saw is held in place by either guide blocks or bearings. Bearings run cooler, smoother and quieter than blocks. The majority of saws have guide blocks but there are conversion kits available or blocks made out of resins, which run cooler and smoother than the steel factory ones supplied. If is worth using either option since you blades will last longer and the noise level will almost be cut in half.

Most machines these days have dust ports of some sort and they are important for the same reasons; cleaner air, safer shop environment, cleaner longer lasting machine.

If you are interested in doing a lot of resawing, look into an actual resaw band saw. Most band saws will go up to ¾" or 13 wide blades and although they can resaw the odd piece, they are not designed for continuous long-term use like this. Resaw band saws have a much more powerful motor and use blades about 33 wide, some are even carbide tipped. You need the wider blades to maintain a straight even cut throughout the entire depth of material. Try and determine how much resawing you will want to do. If a standard band saw will be okay, just do not push it too hard when cutting material 33 and thicker and use as wide a blade as possible.

Make sure the blade tension; tracking, height and table adjustments are all convenient, easy to use and secure. You do not want to be constantly adjusting and tuning the machine so make sure there are no obvious problems. Any sloppy connections or adjustments could mean problems in tracking or stability.

Just a quick work about two common accessories. If your band saw does not come with a lamp, it is a good idea to buy one or set something up. Because of how you normally stand at the saw, your shadow naturally falls right across the table and blade. This can be very annoying if you are trying to make intricate and precise cuts, so a lamp is worth it. The second is a circle cutting attachment. This is a pet peeve of mine. There are some on the market, but they usually have a very small capacity. They are fine if you are making toys or smaller projects but not for even a medium sized tabletop. This is one attachment, which is easy to make yourself. Some plywood for the top, a 2¡Á2 or 2¡Á4 for the leg support and some clamps and you are in business. You can make it as large as you need, providing lots of work support and you can cut small circles on it as well.

-Size. 83 to 243 throat and 33 to 133 height capacity. Make sure it will have enough depth and height capacity to do what you want it to. You need to take into account space, capacity and what you want to cut. Band saw sizes can be advertised either by the diameter of the wheels or by the cutting capacity, so be careful when you compare.

-What is the frame made of and is it solid and stable.

-Motor - Check the horsepower and amps. You'll need both when comparing. For bench top saws get at least 1/4 HP, better 1/3HP and for general shop use, a floor model with 3/4HP, or even better 1HP.

-Check that the wheels are balanced. You can tell by looking for circular drill marks where material has been removed to equal the weight around the rim.

-Table should tilt to 45 degrees right and if it tilts to the left as well it is a bonus. What size mitre slot and what kind on mitre gauge.

-Does it have guide blocks or bearings and if blocks is there bearing kits or resin blocks to replace the original steel blocks.

-What size dust port does it have and does it match your system or do you need an adapter.

-Where is the power switch and is it easy to reach? Switches in awkward places can be a safety hazard.

-Where is it made and where do you get parts & service? There are some excellent offshore machines out there but you have to be careful because there are also some bad ones. Check the brand and the company you are buying from and find out exactly where you can get servicing done.

Everybody loves beer and would like to make their own, but they're not sure how to get started. "What kind of equipment do I need?" is normally the first question that people new to brewing ask. Many people think that it's very pricey and difficult to obtain all of the home brewing equipment they need to get going, but it's cheaper and easier than you think. Let's discuss the brewing products you'll need to purchase to get started with home brewing beer using malt extract.

For a five gallon batch of home brew, you will need a large pot to boil at least 2 or three gallons of water. This brew kettle needs to be strong and have handles that make it easy to pick up when full of hot liquid. To make sure you have the correct temperature values during brewing you'll need to have a good thermometer. Before you add the yeast to your brew you need to ensure that the temperature is neither too hot or too cold. If the temperature is too high it may kill the yeast, and too low the yeast will simply not do anything.

Make sure you have a long steel spoon to stir your brew, as a wooden spoon can become filled with bacteria and is not ideal to use. After you're done with brewing the beer you will need to transfer it to a fermenter. There are several types of fermenters available, with the most basic being the plastic bucket type. To measure the alcohol strength of your beer you'll need to purchase a hydrometer, a gadget that measures the density of your brew.

Once fermentation is complete, you need to transfer your beer to a bottling bucket. You must use a sanitizing solution to clean your brewing equipment so your beer does not become ruined with bacteria. Transferring the beer is done by using a plastic hose connected to a siphon. To move the beer from the bottling bucket into the individual bottles, you'll need to use a plastic hose in conjunction with a bottle filler. Bottle fillers are spring-loaded and make filling the bottles a lot easier than using a simple hose.

Of course you will need bottles and bottle caps for your home brew. You need roughly 50 12 ounce. bottles for a typical 5-gallon batch of home brew. Remember, each bottle must be cleaned and sanitized before adding your beer. Applying the bottle caps to the bottles is the final step in making your home brew. For this you need to invest in a bottle capper, and I recommend you purchase a standing or counter-top version instead of the hand-held model. Don't forget to sanitize the bottle caps as well!

You may also want to purchase a strainer to help filter hops and other brewing sediment from your kettle before you transfer your home brew to your fermenter. A funnel can also come in handy if you're using a plastic or glass carboy but is not necessary if you use a plastic bucket. To take samples of your beer during fermentation you may need to use a beer thief, but you could use anything really that is easily sanitized.

what is Aluminum Investment Casting

In our day and age, technology is everywhere -- but when it comes to one of the most prevalent manufacturing processes in existence, the process has more or less stayed the same for hundreds if not thousands of years. A decorative outdoor light fixture according to claim 1, wherein the selected decorative light filter and lens assembly comprises, a transparent tube having upper and lower ends, a laminate structure of a pair of colored discs and a transparent disc secured to the lower end of said transparent tube, a centrally apertured convex disc having a mirrored convex surface secured to the upper end of said transparent tube, said mirrored convex surface facing the colored discs on the lower end of said transparent tube, a second laminate structure of a pair of complementary colored discs, and a hemispherical lens secured to the upper end of said transparent tube and the convex disc on the side opposite from the mirrored surface, whereby light rays from said lamp pass upwardly through said transparent disc and said pair of colored discs into the interior of said transparent tube, some of the light rays being reflected by the mirrored surface and directed through the side of the transparent tube, other light rays passing through the apertured convex disc and through the pair of complementary colored discs and hemispherical lens to the atmosphere.

4. A decorative outdoor light fixture according to claim 1, wherein the selected decorative light filter and lens assembly comprises a solid, transparent cylinder, a complementary colored disc bonded to one end of said cylinder, a transparent disc bonded beneath said complementary colored disc, a laminate structure of a pair of complementary colored discs and a hemispherical lens bonded to the other end of said cylinder, whereby light rays from the lamp pass through the transparent disc, complementary colored disc, transparent cylinder, pair of complementary colored discs and hemispherical lens to the atmosphere.

5. A decorative Garden lights fixture according to claim 1, wherein the support means comprises a pipe adapted to extend into the ground, a pipe coupling having one end threadably secured to the upper end of said pipe, and a vertically extending nipple threadably connected to the opposite end of said nipple.

6. A decorative outdoor light fixture according to claim 5, wherein a transversely extending plate is mounted in the pipe coupling, each end of said plate having a tongue portion cooperating with the thread grooves in said coupling, whereby the plate is adjustably mounted within the coupling, said electrical socket being secured to said plate.

7. A decorative outdoor light fixture according to claim 5, wherein said vertically extending nipple has an upper end, the pipe union comprises an adaptor threadably mounted to the upper end of said nipple, and a collar having a radially inwardly turned flange threadably connected to the adaptor.

8. A decorative outdoor light fixture according to claim 1, wherein said pipe union includes a collar with a radially inwardly directed flange, each decorative light filter and lens assembly has at least one complementary colored disc bonded to the upper surface of a transparent disc, the diameter of the transparent disc being greater than the diameter of the colored disc to thereby provide a rim portion on the transparent disc cooperating with said flange on said collar for holding the light filter and lens assembly on the end of said conduit means.

9. A decorative outdoor light fixture according to claim 8, including at least a second colored disc of a second complementary color bonded to the upper surface of said at least one complementary colored disc, and a transparent hemispherical lens connected above said at least a second colored disc.

10. A decorative outdoor light fixture according to claim 8, including a second colored disc of a second complementary color bonded to the upper surface of said at least one complementary colored disc, a third colored disc of said second complementary color bonded to the upper surface of said second colored disc, and a transparent hemispherical lens bonded to the upper surface of said third colored disc.

11. A decorative Light poles fixture according to claim 10, wherein said second colored disc of said second complementary color includes a center portion having the complementary color of said at least one complementary colored disc.

12. A decorative outdoor light fixture according to claim 10, wherein said at least one complementary colored disc has a clear center portion, said second colored disc of said second complementary color includes a center portion having the complementary color of said at least one complementary colored disc.

13. A decorative outdoor light fixture according to claim 8, wherein said at least one complementary colored disc is positioned adjacent said radially inwardly directed flange.

14. A decorative Outdoor lighting fixture according to claim 8, including a transparent tube having upper and lower ends, a second colored disc having the complementary color of said at least one complementary colored disc connected to the upper surface of said at least one complementary colored disc and to the lower end of said transparent tube, a convex disc having a central aperture and a mirrored convex surface connected to the upper end of said transparent tube, said mirrored convex surface facing the lower end of said transparent tube, a third colored disc of the complementary color of said at least one complementary colored disc connected to the upper Outdoor lamps end of said transparent tube, a fourth colored disc of a second complementary color connected to the upper surface of said third colored disc; and a hemispherical lens connected to the upper surface of said fourth colored disc.

A decorative outdoor light fixture according to claim 8, including a transparent cylinder connected to the upper surface of said at least one complementary colored disc, a second colored disc of a second complementary color connected to the upper surface of said Street lights transparent cylinder, a third colored disc having the complementary color of said at least one complementary colored disc connected to the upper surface of said second colored disc, and a transparent hemispherical lens connected to the upper surface of said third colored disc.

Home Grown Hops For Home Brewed Beer

The hop plant (Humulus lupulus) has been cultivated for over 1500 years. Most people know of its use in flavoring beer, but it can also be used as an ornamental plant for your landscaping. This article is written for those who will use it for both.

The first order of business is to find the perfect spot to plant your rhizome. I recommend full sunlight for your plants. Hops can grow up to 20 feet in height when supported by a trellis but I opted to grow my hops up my backyard fence which is located next to my decking where I brew beer.

The hop rhizome can be planted either vertically or horizontally in a trench about 2 - 3 inches in depth. Surround the plant with a mound of soil to help direct water to the plant as you want to keep the rhizome moist until the first sprouts appear. After a few weeks you will want to train the plant on a trellis, I support my vines with some inexpensive wire fence screwed into my wood fence and I opted to weave my plants zigzag through my wire fencing in a 6ft by 6ft area. Most commercial growers will train 5 or 6 shoots on a trellis but I only train 2 at the most since I have limited space. Just cut back any unneeded shoots.

Like most plants don't over water your hops. If you water on a regular time table you may be hurting your hop plants. Keeping the soil moist all the time encourages only the top roots to spread. For a healthy plant you need the deep roots to grow so only water when the top soil is drying out. But don't wait for the leaves to turn brown or purple before you water just monitor the top soil. You will need to feed your hops on a regular schedule. I use an all purpose vegetable fertilizer that mixes with water.

Despite your best efforts, hops may be savaged by disease or pests. Downy mildew is the most common disease. Avoid the hot, moist conditions that favor spore germination. This is why I don't use sprinklers to water the plants. And I usually water early in the morning so the leaves can dry off.

The most common pest is the hop aphid. It is a tiny, soft green pest that sucks the juices out of the plant. They should be controlled before the hops produce cones, because once they get into the cones a black mold grows on their secretions rendering the cones unusable. Ladybugs are a natural enemy of aphids and will help keep them under control. Insecticidal soaps and diatomaceous earth are used successfully to control aphids. As a last resort, commercial insecticides might be needed.

Set Tooth Vs Swaged Tooth Bandsaw Blades

Many people ask me about wide cut blades.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of using wide cut blades. I have had a good amount of experience with bands up to 12" wide, but for this particular article we will deal with the most popular applications and that is blades in the 2"-6" width.

Let's start with the tooth of the bandsaw blades:

We know that tooth load is very important with all bandsaw blades, and keeping tooth load down per square inch is the most important thing that a sawyer/sawfiler can do to preserve his bandsaw.

For an illustration of this let's look at the teeth of a swage tooth or a welded tooth band. Note that all comparisons will have to be made of equal width bands for this comparison to be accurate. The swage tooth and the welded tooth have a full tooth width at the top or the leading edge. The full tooth has three cutting edges. It has the top or leading edge and the two sides.

The tooth load is created by all edges that cut wood. The tooth width on these type blades are usually twice the width of the body. For instance, if the body is.042 then the tooth is usually created to be at least.084. So each tooth is cutting a kerf (path) through the log at least.084.

The sides of the tooth are also cutting and adding tooth load. All of the cutting load is distributed into the gullet and most of the stress is at the narrowest place of the band which is the deepest part of the gullet. The body is pulling the tooth through the cut and the tooth is under load and is pried backward in micro amounts and the steel molecules at the narrowest part of the gullet are being stretched and being put under great stress.

The bandsaw steel is, for basic understanding a spring, or spring steel. I say this because it has the ability to stretch a certain distance and return to its original shape. Remember, the term 'certain distance' this is important.

Each molecule of steel is round in shape, and can be stretched or elongated to a certain distance before it is stressed and begins to remain elongated. When a molecule remains elongated it has been distorted in the gullet from pulling too large (more than the body molecules can take) of a tooth load.

The band gullet has what we call a long front. We say this because the front has stretched but the molecules at the back of the band have remained un stretched. This condition causes a hump, that rises up in the middle portion of the band, or in other words the middle of the band will hump toward the slab side and the mirror image is on the log side being concave. At this point the band will dive into the log every time!

Note: A good spring has the ability to elongate or compress a certain or prescribed amount and return to its original shape millions of times without losing strength. It is only when the prescribed amount is exceeded that it becomes distorted and loses strength. Think of valve springs in a gas/diesel engine. They operate within their ability to extend, compress and return every time and run almost forever under harsh conditions. They do not exceed their steels ability to stretch and return.

A good understanding of the above two paragraphs is very important to understand an accurate comparison between the swage tooth band and the set tooth that we will discuss below.

Now let us look at a set tooth band of .042 thickness:

The Kerf of a set tooth band is also two times the thickness. Usually .084 (sometimes more sometimes less). The difference is the set tooth shares the tooth load between 3 teeth. Each tooth is only .042 on the top or the leading edge. The most any tooth can cut is.042 wide. The average that the 3 teeth cut is only .028. The right and left tooth only cut the set amount beyond the body width.

Only 2 of the teeth cut on the side and they only have 1 side to create side load which is very minimum. It is so small that I do not consider it to have a side load. The reason there is not a side load is the angle of the side of the tooth. The tooth is bent or set at such a sharp angle on the side that only the top corner of about.010 touches the wood fiber. Of course, if you run your band excessively dull it does take on more side load.

Now compare the gullet stretch per tooth. Remember both band bodies are .042. The set tooth has the total kerf stress divided between 3 teeth. The swaged full tooth carries the entire kerf stress per tooth, plus the side load on 2 sides per tooth. It is easy to understand that the full tooth carries twice the load just because of the top width of .084. Then add the 2 sides of load and we have at least 3 times more tooth load per square inch than the set tooth bands have.

What does this mean? From my experience the set tooth pound for pound will perform 2 to 3 times better than a full tooth of the same band width and thickness. This is true even if a special steel is welded to from the full tooth.

Let me talk about the body of the band for a bit here. I have spoken of the distortion and how it changes the middle portion of the band to dish on the log side. This causes a band to start diving into the log in an uncontrolled manner.

Remember that distortion is caused when a band is driven with a tooth load greater than the body steel is capable of withstanding and still return back to its original shape. Any bandsaw that is pushed to this point of stretch has become distorted. This will cause the band to not run good and it will dive into the log because of the natural change of curvature called anti-clastic curvature.


Myth of restoring bandsaws debunked:

When this happens the band cannot be restored to new by the Saw Repairman/Sawfiler. However, the sawfiler can distort the middle of the back of the band to equal the front stretch/distortion.

Of course for those who know the term, this is called benching. This is when a roller or hammer is used to expand/distort the molecules to match the front distortion. The roller stretches the molecules by elongating them as it is pressed between two specially shaped steel rollers. The hammer expands the molecules in a star burst shape to achieve the distortion of making the middle of the band back longer.

The hammer needs to be crowned to give a star burst expansion. If a sawyer runs the band too hard or too dull he will distort the front. Then, when he sends it out for repair the sawfiler has no choice but to distort the middle and the back to make the blade equal everywhere. He can make the blade saw and appear as if it is restored it to original, but it is not.

Of course the tooth sharpness can be restored, but I am speaking of the body distortion. Now after 3 or 4 runs the band has been distorted by the sawyer and then distorted by the sawfiler and the molecules pulled apart (cracks in the gullets) and the sawyer or owner asks what is the sawfiler doing wrong. It is not the sawfilers fault. It is a matter of stressing the blade more than it can stand.

If you want this cracking to stop then you have to lower tension which in turn makes you slow down and pull the band for sharpening more often. Or leave the tension the same and just sharpen much more often. All in all keep the tooth load lower.

It is my opinion that a good set tooth band with correct curvature that is 1-1/2 wide will outperform dollar for yield, a band twice the width at 3 inches that has a full tooth. It is easier to keep the tooth load down on a set tooth band and it is easier to maintain a set tooth band.
